NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court (SC) mandates NEET for Indian students to take MBBS admissions abroad. However, introduced by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2018, this regulation ensures ha all aspiring doctors meet the required standards to practice medicine in India. Meanwhile, this new rule, effective from the 2025 academic session, ensure all candidates meet the same standards for practicing medicine in India. Although this rule does not stop students from working overseas, it emphasizes the importance of maintaining high-quality medical education.
Further, the Court ruled that making the NEET UG exam mandatory is fair and transparent, without violating legal provisions. This regulation aligns with the Graduate Medical Education Regulations of 1997, ensuring consistent standards in medical education.
Supreme Court Mandates NEET
A panel of Supreme Court Justices, BR Gavai and K Vinod Chandan, examined a petition contesting the regulation. Students expressed their opposition to the ruling. Contending that the regulation enacted without amending the Indian Medical Council Act of 1956. Nevertheless, the court clarified that the Medical Council possesses the authority. To enforce the regulations as stipulated in Section 33 of the IMC Act.

The bench underscored that once the revised regulations implemented. Students pursuing MBBS abroad must adhere strictly to the eligibility criteria necessary for practicing medicine in India. With no exceptions permitted under these rules. However, the Supreme Court noted that these stipulations do not restrict students’ capacity to practice medicine in other countries.
The registration for NEET UG 2025 is currently open, with the deadline for applications set for March 7. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will administer the examination on May 4. This year, several new regulations have introduced for the NEET exam, which will affect MBBS admissions.
