New Exam Changes: Candidates preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025 have just over a month left, as the exam is set for May 4. This year, NEET-UG, which is India’s leading undergraduate medical entrance examination, will implement significant changes, including a revised paper format. Experts suggest that these alterations may influence the number of top scorers and the overall outcomes.
The official announcement emphasizes a crucial modification: the elimination of the option-based structure. Previously, the exam divided into two sections for each subject—Section A and Section B. Candidates required to answer 35 questions from Section A and could choose 10 out of 15 questions in Section B. This format, which introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, has now abolished.
The updated format decreases the total number of questions from 200 to 180. Comprising 90 questions in Biology (a combination of Botany and Zoology) and 45 questions each in Physics and Chemistry. Furthermore, the exam now features a single paper for Biology, further simplifying the structure.

Another significant change is the reduction in the duration of the exam. Candidates will now have three hours to complete the test. This is 20 minutes shorter than the previous time allocation of three hours and 20 minutes.
These modifications anticipated to lower the cut-off marks and decrease the number of candidates achieving perfect scores. In 2024, 67 candidates initially attained a perfect score of 720 out of 720. But this figure fell to 17 after adjustments to the physics answer key.
Among the 17 perfect scorers in 2024, there were four candidates from Rajasthan, three from Maharashtra, and two each from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. In total, only 24 candidates have achieved a perfect score in NEET-UG from 2020 to 2024.
Given these changes, candidates encouraged to modify their preparation strategies to effectively align with the new exam format.
