India Sees 40% Growth in Medical Colleges, 42% Rise in MBBS Seats Over 5 Years

Growth in Medical Colleges: In response to inquiries from MPs Bhumare Sandipanrao Asaram and Gyaneshwar Patil regarding the status of medical colleges and MBBS seats throughout India, particularly in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. However, the Minister confirmed that the Government has made significant strides in expanding the infrastructure for medical education.

Further, the total number of Growth in medical colleges from 558 in 2020-21 to 780 currently, which includes 80 colleges in Maharashtra and 31 in Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, the number of MBBS seats has risen from 83,275 to 111,846. With Madhya Pradesh accounting for 5,200 of these seats.

Smt. Patel highlighted that these advancements are part of a comprehensive strategy to bolster the healthcare system. She detailed several key initiatives undertaken by the Government, such as:

  1. Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS): The Government facilitated the addition of 4,977 MBBS seats across 83 colleges. Along with 4,058 postgraduate seats in Phase-I (72 colleges) and 4,000 postgraduate seats in Phase-II (65 colleges).
  2. Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY): As part of the initiative to upgrade Government Medical Colleges. Through the construction of Super Specialty Blocks, 75 projects have approved, with 71 already completed.
  3. Establishment of New AIIMS: The Government has sanctioned 22 new AIIMS under the Central Sector Scheme. With undergraduate courses now underway in 19 of these institutions.
  4. Faculty Enhancement Measures: To address faculty shortages, the Government has acknowledged DNB qualifications for teaching positions.
  5. Age Limit Enhancement: The maximum age for the appointment, extension, or re-employment of teachers, deans, principals, and directors in medical colleges has raised to 70 years.

These strategic measures designed to broaden medical education and improve the delivery of healthcare services across India.
